After School Matters Selected as NBA Foundation 2023 Grantee
February 9, 2023
CHICAGO—The NBA Foundation announced Thursday that After School Matters®, the city’s leading provider of after school and summer programs for Chicago teens, was selected as one of its 2023 grantees. The funds will support 50 internships for young people during the organization’s summer 2023 program session. After School Matters is one of 31 organizations selected across the nation this year to receive these life-changing funds. Read more about the NBA Foundation announcement here.
“After School Matters is excited to partner with the NBA Foundation to offer paid internships to youth of color. Teens in underserved communities often must choose between earning money or taking advantage of unpaid learning opportunities in professional settings. This grant will support approximately 50 of the 600 paid internship opportunities ASM will provide this summer, opening doors to new experiences and career options for Chicago’s teens,” said Mary Ellen Caron, CEO of After School Matters.
Summer internships through After School Matters allow teens to gain hands-on experience in a career path of their choice. Young people are able to apply for internships to learn business management at a coffee shop, become a docent at a museum, work with medical staff at a local hospital, and many other career paths they might be interested in and not have access to otherwise.
“The Chicago Bulls are a longtime supporter of After School Matters and the work they do to provide teens transformative opportunities across the city,” said Adrienne Scherenzel-Curry, Chicago Bulls Vice President, Community Engagement / Executive Director, Chicago Bulls Charities. “We are excited they are receiving recognition and support at the national level by the NBA Foundation to provide young people internship opportunities to develop new skills that will help them in college and their careers.”
After School Matters offers Chicago teens free program opportunities and internships in the arts, communications and leadership, sports, and STEM. These program and internship opportunities allow young people to earn a stipend, have fun, explore new interests with their peers, and gain new skills that will help them in college, work, and life. The summer program session will run from July to August, and applications will open for Chicago teens this spring. Visit afterschoolmatters.org for updates on the summer application, to apply, and more information.
