At After School Matters, we create solid foundations in Chicago’s teens by nurturing their talents and passions, building a brighter future for our youth and our City. Every day in our programs, our teens are striving to not only better themselves but strengthen their communities and build a brighter future for all of Chicago. Our teens are the future artists, activists, chefs, entrepreneurs, coaches, and engineers that will create change.
This summer, we will reach approximately 13,000 teens across Chicago who are building their futures in our programs. From our Peacemakers and Chicago Police Department (CPD) Initiatives to programs in our four content areas — arts, communications & leadership, sports, and STEM — our teens are taking great strides to develop their skills, find their voices, and ultimately build a better collective future for us all. See how our teens are building the future this summer.
Peacemaker teens work together to stop the violence and make a positive contribution to their communities. Teens in the program learn about the peace-building process, reflect on their communities, recognize their roles as peacemakers, and design a project to spread the message of peace. The projects end with an opportunity for teens to showcase their accomplishments along with youth from around the city of Chicago. Teens will gain an understanding of the peace-making process and youth empowerment. Through this program, teens will build skills in civic engagement, develop leadership skills, and build a sense of community.
“This program created a lot of opportunities, not just for the summer, but for the future. And as far as promoting peace, it registers in your mind and when you find yourself in those situations you know what to do. I feel like that’s a great thing and more people should experience it.” —Jevan, Englewood
