We are so honored that U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy visited our Gately Park facility this week to hear from our instructors and Adler University clinicians as well as directly from our teens about the state of youth mental health. The conversation continued at the City Club Chicago yesterday, where ASM teens, local leaders, and the U.S. Surgeon General discussed what is being done in Chicago and Illinois to support youth mental health and the importance of eliminating stigma.

What an incredible night! On behalf of the Board and staff, thank you for making After School Matters’ 2022 Gala a night to remember! With teen performances, music, amazing skyline views, and inspiring words from our Board members and CEO, we are so thankful we were able to celebrate in person with all of you. Thanks to your generosity more than $2.5 million was raised for Chicago’s teens – continuing After School Matters’ legacy of providing life-changing programs all across the city.

Thank you to all of our donors and community members for making it out to our first in-person Sneaker Ball. We danced the night away with DJ Kid Clay, saw talented teens in action, and enjoyed a fantastic evening of community in support of Chicago teens. The event raised over $100,000 for teen stipends! A special thank you to our sponsors and Associate Board for making this night we’ll never forget!

In commemorating 30 years of empowering local youth to explore their talents and shape their futures, After School Matters engaged local artist and educator Lisa Glenn Armstrong to create a projection for Art on theMART documenting the creative work of Chicago teens over the last three decades.
The five-minute piece included photographs of teen-created mosaics currently found in public art murals across the city, animated clips of past performances by the After School Matters Dance Ensemble, Hi-Def Dance Ensemble, and M.A.D.D. Rhythms, and music composed by teens in After School Matters’ Future Music Creators in a remote program in 2021.
