After School Matters’ Advanced Painting teens had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to partner with NASCAR this past spring to create a 200-foot mural which was on public display at NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race, July 1-2, 2023.
The massive mural concept and design was created by the teens with the help of their seasoned instructor Roho Garcia. The theme of the mural was “Driven with Chicago Pride” and was inspired by the idea of NASCAR driving through Chicago. It featured cars racing through the city, positive messages throughout the artwork, and highlighted Chicago’s beautiful and diverse neighborhoods. The mural was on public display at Butler Field for attendees to enjoy.
Teens were surprised with a visit from NASCAR driver Harrison Burton who shared his experience as a driver, painted with them, and posed with the teens in front of an official race car!
Thank you to NASCAR and our amazing instructor Roho for providing our young people with this amazing opportunity!
