After School Matters Teens Shine Across Chicago This Fall

Our teens are taking part in programs and events across the city, showcasing their talents for their friends, family, and their communities. Our young artists performed dances, shared their artwork, taught mindfulness through meditation, captured beautiful architecture through photos, and showcased their talent in so many other creative ways.

Check out some of the work by our young people this fall.

Mindfulness Leaders

Teens in the Mindfulness Leader program at Von Steuben Metropolitan High School took their meditation practice outdoors, using the sounds of nature and the city as their mantra. Afterward, they gathered as a group to reflect on their experiences, discussing both the challenges and successes they encountered during their meditation. They also explored ways to grow and improve as they continue their journey of learning the 23 core principles of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and leadership. These dedicated teens are committed to sharing the benefits of meditation with their families, friends, and their community.

Arts in the Dark Parade

Teens in our Mariachi Ensemble at Juarez High School and the Experimental Photography in the Dark Room program at Gallery 37 proudly represented After School Matters in the 10th Annual Arts in the Dark Parade along historic State Street. The event celebrated Halloween, bringing together artists, performers, and community organizations from across the city, entertaining 50,000 parade-goers with an unforgettable evening of creativity and fun. Our teens had an incredible time performing classic mariachi songs and capturing stunning photos of the festivities, showcasing their talent and passion for the arts.

Advanced Digital Photography

Our young photographers visited The Richard H. Driehaus Museum to explore the Photographing Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit, capturing stunning images of his iconic designs. As they hone their photography skills, these teens are learning that there are no bad angles—only new perspectives waiting to be discovered.

Teens in the Creative Curators program at Gallery 37 spent weeks preparing an unforgettable event to honor the rich tradition of Día de los Muertos and its cultural significance. The night featured a stunning photography series from the Digital Photography program, a set from the DJ Fundamentals teens, a short horror film from the Advanced Videography teens, and a variety of themed activities, decorations, and food. It was a great evening that brought together the ASM teen community to celebrate creativity, culture, and collaboration at Gallery 37!

Gardening

Teens in the Gardening program at North-Grand High School are preparing the garden for winter by wrapping up this season’s harvest. They carefully picked peppers, tomatoes, and tomatillos, cleared out weeds, and trimmed plants like lavender and herbs. This hands-on experience not only teaches valuable gardening skills but also helps teens understand the cycles of nature and the importance of sustainable practices. Their hard work ensures the garden will be ready to bloom again when spring arrives!

No Small Plans: Introduction to Community Planning

Our No Small Plans: Introduction to Community Planning program recently attended a North Lawndale Community Action Council meeting at Collins High School. This experience allowed our teen apprentices to connect with local leaders, hear community concerns, and gain valuable insights into the challenges their neighborhood faces. By engaging in these discussions, our apprentices are not just learning—they’re discovering ways to make a positive impact and become active changemakers in their community!

Día de los Muertos in Pilsen

Our young Aztec Dancers performed at the 45th Annual Día de los Muertos de la Raza celebration at Dvorak Park in Pilsen. The parade brought together people from all over Chicago and the suburbs to honor and remember loved ones and pets who have passed. Guests enjoyed hot chocolate and conchas, a traditional Mexican sweet bread, along with vibrant dances, beautiful puppets, and ofrendas dedicated to those who are no longer with us.

Our teens continue to inspire and connect with their communities, making Chicago proud through their passion, dedication, and talent.
