ASMU is opening doors to new opportunities for Chicago teens. This fall, more than 120 teens from programs across the city traveled to two leading universities—the University of Wisconsin–Madison and the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign—to explore STEM pathways, meet faculty, and imagine themselves on a college campus. These visits offered teens hands-on experiences, meaningful connections, and a firsthand look at the wide range of careers available in science, technology, engineering, and beyond.

ASMU programs help teens get a head start on their college journeys through college visits, ACT prep, classes on how to apply for financial aid, and scholarships.
Exploring Life Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison
Fifty-seven teens from ASMU programs at Instituto Health Science Career Academy, Gage Park High School, Farragut Career Academy High School, Charles A. Prosser Career Academy, and Perspectives High School of Technology & Leadership Academy visited the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. They stepped into the world of plant sciences, genetics, and forensic science through a series of interactive workshops. Teens collected and potted their own plant clippings to grow at home and participated in an “Alien Blood Scene Investigation,” identifying suspects and working together to solve a mock crime.
UW-Madison faculty led the sessions with energy and expertise, helping teens see how scientific concepts apply to real-world careers. In one particularly special moment, teens in the genetics group connected with a Principal Investigator from Venezuela; a meaningful exchange for several participants who share that heritage.
“Our students had a blast. They were really engaged in the workshops — asking great questions and just excited to learn new things and see the campus.”
– Rodrigo Garcia, ASM Instructor

Engineering Possibilities at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign
Sixty-three teens from ASMU programs at Jones College Prep, After School Matters at Gately Park, Art in Motion Creative Arts Middle & High School Chicago, and Taft High School visited the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign. Teens explored the College of Engineering; touring research labs, innovation hubs, and collaborative learning spaces where groundbreaking ideas take shape. Throughout the visit, teens learned about the many different engineering disciplines and the ways engineers solve real-world problems — from infrastructure and robotics to sustainability and technology design.
The tour also featured an interactive STEM challenge that encouraged teamwork, creative problem-solving, and critical thinking. The young engineers gained a hands-on understanding of the types of projects engineering students tackle, leaving many feeling inspired and curious about a future in the field.

Creating Pathways to the Future
ASMU college visits are more than tours, they’re transformative experiences that help teens discover their strengths and spark new aspirations. By stepping onto college campuses, participating in hands-on workshops, and meeting diverse professionals, teens gain confidence in their ability to pursue higher education and meaningful careers.
We’re grateful to our university partners, faculty members, and ASM instructors who make these visits possible. Together, we’re expanding pathways and helping Chicago teens take bold steps toward their futures.
