Building Tomorrow’s Innovators: After School Matters launches AI Education Program with Support from Google.org

This past fall, we launched a new program with support from Google.org to equip Chicago teens with cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills, preparing them for future careers in technology with groundbreaking new programs.

The Intro to AI programs took place at the Michael and Karyn Lutz Center for After School Matters, Gallery 37 Center for the Arts, and After School Matters at Gately Park facilities, introducing teens to AI concepts while helping them enhance their computer science and critical thinking skills. Participants learned from instructors skilled in AI, ensuring teens received high-quality, impactful instruction in their programs. Teens collaborated with peers, explored AI-related career paths, and applied AI to solve real-world problems. By the end of the program, students trained AI software to recognize images, motions, and sounds. One standout project involved creating an app to notify gamers when they’re slouching during gameplay.

“I’ve learned so much in this program like how to use AI to help with daily tasks and how this technology can help benefit the world and our futures,” shared Keenan, an ASM teen in the Gately program

In addition to the programs, ASM hosted a virtual challenge that engaged hundreds of teens and paid them a stipend to create unique artwork and music using AI technology.

“Artificial intelligence is poised to shape our world in profound ways with the potential to revolutionize healthcare, address climate change, and create a more equitable and sustainable world,” said Jessica Holberg, Chicago Tech Education Outreach Lead for Google.org. “By equipping young people with AI literacy and fluency concepts, ASM is not just teaching them about technology; they’re empowering them to become the changemakers who will solve some of the world’s biggest challenges.”

These programs highlight ASM and Google’s commitment to empowering Chicago youth with the skills they need to thrive in a technology-driven future. This is just the beginning of AI programming at ASM. Our spring session, which kicks off on February 24, will launch our second round of AI programs, introducing even more teens to this transformative technology. Our application is open and interested teens can apply to these programs and so many others on our ASM website.

“AI is shaping the future of technology, making it essential for young people to access these critical resources,” said Tony Diaz, ASM’s Chief Program Officer. “We’re deeply grateful to Google whose support has been foundational in developing AI programs for teens, empowering them with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in their careers and beyond.”
