Teens in After School Matters’ Cooking and Baking program at the Lutz Center and the You Got Served Culinary program in the Austin community got a powerful reminder of what’s possible when passion meets opportunity. During a hands-on visit from Chicago Bulls forward Julian Phillips and team chef Christine Blank, young chefs stepped into the spotlight—showcasing their skills, asking thoughtful questions, and learning how their culinary talents connect to real-world careers.
Teens worked side-by-side with Julian and Chef Christine to prepare dishes crafted for a professional athlete. Teens applied techniques they’ve been mastering all Fall Session—everything from seasoning and knife skills to balancing nutrients—while receiving immediate feedback from two experts who use food as fuel every day.

Julian shared stories about how cooking has always grounded him, crediting his family for instilling a love of food and togetherness. As teens plated their dishes, he talked openly about what he eats before games, how his nutrition has evolved since entering the league, and how experimenting in the kitchen helps him stay connected to home.

“As a professional athlete, I understand the importance of food and its role in performance. And while nutrition is important, it should also be fun. I’ve enjoyed spending time with teens in After School Matters during the season of giving to give back to the Chicago community that supports our team.” – Julian Phillips, Chicago Bulls forward
Chef Christine brought her journey full circle by speaking directly to teens about how she discovered her love for cooking through baking, and how those early experiences eventually led her to the NBA. After tasting the dishes prepared by teens—including chicken and avocado sandwiches, salmon and bagel sandwiches, and egg bites—she told them their recipes were not only delicious but professional quality.
Teens left the workshop energized by the guidance they received. Many said the experience helped them see culinary arts as more than a hobby, it’s a pathway they can continue exploring in college, careers, or creative projects.
The visit underscored the Chicago Bulls’ continued commitment to investing in Chicago youth and illuminated how meaningful experiences like this can open doors for teens—whether they dream of being chefs, nutritionists, athletes, or innovators in their own communities. Moments like these empower young people to see themselves in new ways and to keep building toward their futures with confidence.
