It’s no secret that Chicago has one of the most beautiful skylines—lined with soaring skyscrapers and historic buildings that tell the story of our city. Behind every structure are the skilled tradespeople whose talent and hard work built the Chicago we know and love today. Now, the next generation is beginning to imagine themselves as part of that legacy.
This year, After School Matters and HIRE360 launched the very first Next Builders: Intro to Construction Trades program—an exciting pilot made possible thanks to the generous support of Related Affordable Foundation and Related Midwest.
“For young people, early career exploration is essential to laying the groundwork for future success. The Next Builders program introduces teens to meaningful career paths and offers a unique opportunity to spark new interests and awaken new dreams—fueling the ambition and resilience they need to navigate their futures.” – Janell George Smith, Executive Director, Related Affordable Foundation

For many teens, this program offered their very first glimpse into the world of construction. From day one, they were hands-on—exploring the history of the trades while discovering the real career paths and opportunities available to them. That experience matters now more than ever: according to the Associated General Contractors of America, 91% of firms are struggling to find qualified workers. Programs like this not only spark interest but also prepare young people for careers that will be essential for generations to come.

“Through the program, I was able to go on field trips and explore different trades like plumbing, which allowed me to figure out what jobs I’m interested in. This was such a meaningful experience because it taught me valuable skills and gave me the confidence to take the steps toward building a long-term career.” — Kayla, ASM teen.
Our teens went on several field trips in their programs which included Plumbers Hall and an active construction site. At Plumbers Hall, participants learned about fitting pipes, and how plumbers have shaped the plumbing system and Chicago for generations. At the construction site, they talked with professionals who showed them how to build a frame, measure materials, teamwork, and the pride that comes with building something that lasts.
In the classroom, teens gained skills and knowledge while earning certifications in CPR and OSHA Focus Four, which educates workers on how to identify and prevent the four most common causes of fatalities in the construction industry: falls, struck-by, caught-in or between, and electrocutions. These are certifications that are necessary to pursue the trades, and our teens are one step ahead because of their program.
This program and partnership opened doors, sparked new dreams, and gave teens a glimpse of futures filled with possibility. We are so grateful to Related Affordable Foundation and Related Midwest for believing in our teens and investing in their futures. Together, we’re building stronger pathways—and brighter tomorrows—for Chicago’s young people.
