Celebrating 2023 at After School Matters

As we kick off this new year, we want to take a moment to celebrate some of the amazing experiences and accomplishments of our talented teens in 2023. Everything we do is centered on empowering and supporting Chicago teens to equip them with the confidence to achieve their dreams.

Our teens delved into exciting new programs such as Auto Maintenance and American Sign Language, embraced community by participating in the Mexican Independence Day Parade and visiting The Art Institute, and embarked on personal exploration, helping shape their post-high school aspirations.

Scroll on for fantastic highlights from a year filled with growth and discovery, we look forward to sharing more ASM accomplishments in 2024!

In 2023 we were thrilled to offer our teens the opportunity to:

Learn firsthand what goes into presenting a music festival from the folks at C3 at Lollapalooza.

Explore what goes into creating candy bars at a hands-on research and development session at Mars Wrigley.

Present their business ideas to Ulta Beauty executives.

Practice Emergency Medical Response skills in our new EMR program with Superior Ambulance

Throughout the year, more “moments” presented themselves to our teens – to know they are seen and to have the chance to give back to their communities.

In February, Michael B. Jordan visited our Urban Prep Peacemakers program to share with the young men how he started his career and encourage them to pursue their dreams.

Teens in the Bikes @ Sullivan High School collaborated with Gale Community Academy to repair donated bikes at the Recyclery Collective and distribute them to elementary students. The teens gave back to their community by spreading their love for bikes and teaching first-graders how to ride them.

The Museum of Illusions selected ASM as their charity ticket sales partner and welcomed 150 of our teens to take part in the mind-bending exhibits. It’s a fusion of STEM and fun like you’ve never seen before!

ASM teen, Kiet shares his voice on participating in the New Orleans Brass Band/Jazz Improvisation program.

“After my one-year journey with ASM, my biggest lesson is to be bold. I learned to enjoy and treasure every single moment in my program with my friends along with learning so many new things about performing and music.” – Kiet

We were pleased to know so many of our young people went on to post-high school success in 2023.

Teens in our Plumbing program at Plumbers Local 130 Training Center received completion certificates as they begin their path to becoming certified plumbers.

Thanks to 16 private contractors, teens were offered letters of intent to hire our talented teens once they finished high school.

Mildred from Hyde Park, a participant of the T.E.E.N.S. program since Fall 2021, received a full scholarship from the Posse Foundation to attend Middlebury College thanks to the nomination from her ASM instructor David Bild.

“This program means so much to me! Of course, I learned a lot about nature and science, but it also taught me a lot about myself. My whole perception of nature has changed. I used to be a true city person, grossed out by the woods, dirt, and bugs! Now, I’m excited to embrace nature.” – Mildred

ASM Culinary of Fusion at Dunbar teen Darryl was awarded an all-expense paid international scholarship to experience food, culture, and education in London and Ireland!
