Celebrating Pride Month: Fostering Inclusivity for All

At After School Matters, we believe in creating spaces where every teen feels safe, seen, and valued. Pride Month offers a unique opportunity to celebrate the diverse identities within our community and to reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity.

Why Pride Month Matters

Pride Month is more than a celebration; it’s a powerful reminder of the resilience and contributions of the LGBTQIA+ community. For young people, especially those discovering their identities, visible support and representation can make a profound difference. As of 2024, approximately 23.1% of Generation Z adults in the U.S.—those born between 1997 and 2006—identify as LGBTQIA+. By acknowledging and celebrating Pride Month, we send a clear message: every person deserves respect, acceptance, and love.

Read why Pride Month is important to our staff and how they’re celebrating:

As a queer Latina, Pride Month is a time to honor the joy, resilience, and the long-standing legacy of the community. It’s a reminder that being visible is powerful and that our PRIDE is an act of resistance and love. This month, I’m showing up by attending queer events in Chicago, gathering with friends, and creating space for connection, joy, and reflection within the community!” – Maranielly Vazquez, ASM Director of Learning Communities

“June is not only a time for celebration, but also an important opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. As part of this commitment, I will be participating in volunteering efforts to support and uplift our community.” – Brenda Armendariz, ASM Payroll Coordinator
