Empowering Future Fashion Leaders Through After School Matters

Women’s History Month is a great time to recognize women who lead, mentor, and create opportunities for future generations. Women have driven change and helped to shape industries such as fashion, business, and education. ASM’s Fashion Meets Art Instructor Elysia Ganier, an entrepreneur and fashion expert, does just that through her program, where she empowers Chicago teens in fashion, entrepreneurship, and sustainability.

With over 30 years in the fashion industry and two decades as a business owner, Elysia’s work has been featured in the Steve Harvey Women’s Wear Collection and worn by celebrities such as Kenya Moore, Cynthia Bailey of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, and the Miss Black Illinois Pageant.

In Elysia’s program, she shares her expertise and years of experience with her teens, showing them how to upcycle clothing, repurpose materials, and design with sustainability in mind. “Teaching young people about fashion and entrepreneurship builds their self-esteem, strengthens their skill set, and opens doors,” she shared. Her work reinforces the importance of women leaders in education and business.

Her students not only learn about sewing, design, and sustainability, but they also develop confidence, discipline, and creativity. These lessons prepare them for careers in fashion and beyond, fostering innovation and leadership.

ASM gives students a safe place to develop and explore job opportunities. Women mentors play a key role in these spaces, providing guidance and representation. “Programs like this prepare students for the future, equipping them with problem-solving and collaboration skills,” shared Elysia.

Investing in and recognizing women leaders empowers young people, particularly girls, to see themselves as innovators, reinforcing the importance of representation.

During Women’s History Month, it’s important to celebrate the women who mentor and lead. Programs like ASM give young designers the knowledge and support they need to thrive.
