Teens Take Their Talents to New York City for a Film-Focused Learning Experience

After School Matters’ teens in the Advanced Video Production at the Orleans Teen Center took their creativity on the road—embarking on a one-day educational trip to New York City to explore the world of film, media, and storytelling firsthand.

Fifteen teens joined two ASM staff members and their program instructor for an unforgettable day of travel, learning, and inspiration across one of the country’s most iconic creative hubs.

A Day of Discovery

The group departed early on a Saturday morning from the Orleans Teen Center, traveling by bus to O’Hare International Airport. For many of these teens, it was their first time on a plane, which brought a mixture of nervousness and excitement. Airfare for the trip was generously provided by United Airlines, helping make this unique opportunity possible for these young artists.

After arriving in the Big Apple, the teens headed straight to the New York Film Academy for a guided campus tour.

While on campus, participants were invited to observe a class in session, giving them an inside look at an active professional film set. Teens also had the chance to speak directly with a faculty member currently working in the industry—learning what it takes to pursue a career in film and media production.

“I wanted to gain experiences of places outside of Chicago, and maybe more direction on exactly where to go for college and what to major in. One thing I feel was a great idea was the college tour, I loved finding out more about college and looking in on students’ work.”

By the end of the visit, many teens shared that they could see themselves attending the New York Film Academy in the future, while others expressed enthusiasm about continuing to explore filmmaking as a possible career path.

Exploring the City—and Their Futures

Following the campus tour, the group hopped on the subway and made their way to the bright lights of Times Square, taking in the sights, snapping photos, and soaking up the energy of New York City.

Teens enjoyed a sit-down lunch at a New York style pizzeria, sharing reflections from the day and celebrating the chance to experience the city together.

The final stop was the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, where teens explored interactive exhibits highlighting the history of television and film. From authentic costumes and props to behind-the-scenes set design, the museum offered an exciting look at the creative world that inspires so many young storytellers.

“I love film and the idea of having some kind of art role in the film industry – costume design, storyboarding, etc., but I’ve never gotten the opportunity to research it before this! I had a great time seeing all the effort that goes into production at the MOMI (Museum of the Moving Image),”

A Truly Immersive Experience

After a full day of learning and exploration, the group returned to Newark International Airport for their flight back to Chicago.

By the end of the trip, teens had traveled by plane, train, bus, and on foot—exploring two of New York City’s five boroughs and touching down in three different states in a single day.

We’re very grateful to United Airlines for partnering with us during their 100th anniversary and supporting young people to pursue their dreams, no matter the heights.

More than anything, the experience offered teens a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are given the opportunity to learn, create, and imagine their futures beyond the classroom.
